MARATHON CITY HERITAGE CENTER

Explore the local history of Marathon City through historic photos, newspapers, yearbooks, artifacts and more!

Marathon City has a rich and varied history. The Marathon City Heritage Center is a historical and education center that exists to house and collect Marathon City’s cultural and historical assets. The center is committed to preserving and sharing that history through collections of material of local and national interest. Collections include artifacts, data, memorabilia, photos and apparel. You will experience Marathon City's unique past through themed exhibitions of artifacts on display. Click on "Current Exhibitions" to learn more.

The center is a vibrant resource for Marathon City where people can celebrate community pride, and share the history and continued growth of the Village and the surrounding area. The Marathon City 2020 Board also hopes to generate enthusiasm for history among new audiences.

Community interest continues to grow as more people learn about and share Marathon City’s historically rich past, which dates from the early 1800s. While the village was first incorporated in 1884, the area was settled by German immigrants beginning in 1857.  Historians also believe that French missionaries and fur traders were the first Europeans to visit the area during the late 1600’s, navigating the Rib River in Marathon County, Wisconsin.

The Marathon City Heritage Center is a joint collaboration between the Marathon County Historical Society and the Marathon City 2020 Ltd. board. Many of the center’s initial collections on display are on loan from the Marathon County Historical Society.
